Workforce Certificate

This program provides the training needed for corrections officers to transition to law enforcement officers by providing the basic knowledge and understanding required to satisfactorily perform the duties and responsibilities of the police patrol person.

Application Procedure

As part of the application process, students are required to:

Take and pass the Florida Basic Abilities Test (FBAT)
Have a driving history check
Pass physical agility testing
Have a health physical and medical examination
Be 19 years of age
Have a valid driver’s license
Have a high school diploma or GED
Be an American citizen

Specific areas of instruction will include vehicle operations, patrol procedures, criminal investigation, police community relations, and traffic control. This instruction will build on the skills and knowledge they have already obtained through the corrections officer curriculum that they must have successfully completed in the past. The program is limited to Florida certified corrections officers and a valid driver’s license is required.

Career Opportunities, Rapid Placement

By the year 2014, law enforcement will add 145,000 new officers and agents. Twice a year, open house recruitment fairs allow you to apply for programs and positions with numerous agencies.

Annual Salaries

Police officers average $36,000 annually.

Certification

Completion of the program makes you eligible to sit for the State of Florida Law Enforcement exam.

Record of Conviction of a Crime

If the students enroll in an internship or cooperative education class and are seeking experience at a law enforcement agency or facility under Children and Family Services then a background check is performed by the law enforcement agency or facility, and the student may be denied employment (paid or non-paid) based on their criminal record.

Articulation

Your workforce credits may apply toward the Criminal Justice Technology (2239) (A.S.) degree program at Florida State College.
